TRIBUTES TO SPECIAL WOMEN |
|
Our vegetable gardens were started in 2005 by the late Mrs Emily Mbambalala together with the women on our Tiger Brands Food parcel programme in order to add fresh vegetables to their diet and improve the health of the whole family. The ground was rock hard and it was not an easy task. We were so grateful when Mrs Anne-Marie Ferreira with her extensive knowledge and passion for gardens offered to get involved. She enlisted the help of Mrs Wendy Attwell, and together with her team, they transformed the space by creating planter boxes from old vineyard wooden stakes. These boxes have been an invaluable structure for the vegetable garden, and they have over the years produced many harvests of seasonal vegetables for our beneficiaries. Pictured also is Mrs Marietjie Botha. She ran our Sewing Programme every Tuesday for many years, donating twenty sewing machines to seamstresses in Kayamandi when she retired a few years ago. We were so grateful to her for empowering many women to start their own businesses in the community. Today, the beneficiaries of our Food parcel programme continue to work in the garden under the direction of our Garden Manager, and many are assisted in starting their own vegetable gardens at home. We have workshops on permaculture gardening, making your own compost and Xolisile provides at-home mentoring support. We run a Gorgeous Garden competition twice a year, and have a ceremony to announce the winners, with prizes of garden tools, seeds and a cash voucher. |
