FEEDING PROGRAMME

A recent article in the Daily Maverick highlighted research which found that 20.4% of South African households are food-insecure and that one in five families are sending a family member out to beg, while another 46% rely on “less-preferred and less-expensive foods”. At Love to Give we feed 1500 children every day from Ikaya and Kayamandi primary schools. Every day each child has either a peanut butter sandwich or a cup of nutritional porridge. Each week every child will also get a piece of fruit – in winter an orange or a naartjie and in summer an apple or a peach. We are very grateful to our generous donors who enable us to provide a nutritious meal for all these children five days a week..

MICRO ENTERPRISE COURSE

In March this year we invited women who are beneficiaries of our 6-month Sustainable Livelihoods and Food programme to attend a course on starting a small business. Running this course supports our aim to provide our beneficiaries with support to move from poverty towards a more sustainable life. The course is run in Xhosa by Paul Khambule, a local businessman. We have 9 regular attendees on the course, most of whom have already started their small businesses. During the course the women will be supported in developing their business plan and as their business plan develops key concepts are covered including: profit and loss, market research, cash flow, planning and record keeping. Once the formal course has been completed we will continue with support and mentoring for the important early months of the small enterprises. The businesses which are already underway include the selling of second hand clothing, a day care for young babies, an internet cafe and businesses cooking and selling food.

We are very grateful for the support of a group of business women from Sweden who have enabled us to run this course.
