SCHOOL SHOE DONATION |
One of Love to Give’s longest standing donors, Bea Lanting, the founder of Stichting SOS Kayamandi from the Netherlands, approached us recently about donating school shoes to the primary school children in Kayamandi. When looking into the details for her we were delighted to find out about an amazing South African initiative My Walk which recycles plastic waste from hospitals and turns it into black, unisex, lace-up school shoes that are comfortable, durable, recyclable and affordable. The My Walk initiative helped to make Bea’s idea of buying school shoes for the children in Kayamandi a reality. Our Love to Give staff and youth interns compiled a detailed list of the Primary school children and their shoe sizes. When making the list, it became clear that many of the children’s shoe sizes were too small for their ages, illustrating the extent of stunting and malnutrition in this community, and confirming the need for Love to Give to continue our nutrition programme. We provide peanut butter sandwiches and nutritional fortified porridge every day, and fruit weekly. School Shoe donation day was a celebration and the children and their families were delighted with their new school shoes. We are enormously grateful to all of our donors for their continued interest in the well-being of the people of Kayamandi and their generous support. |

BOOK-SHARING |
In early June we celebrated new graduates from our Book-sharing programme. The programme teaches parents to share books with their children in an encouraging and supportive way by asking questions and guiding conversation about the different parts of the pictures and the story. The focus is on the pictures rather than words and it encourages closeness and conversation between parents and children. We are very grateful to the Kavod Trust and the Mikhulu Trust who enable us to run regular book-sharing training programmes. You might like to read a story about one of the participants in the book sharing training at Love to Give on the Mikhulu Trust website – The Power of a Story |
