VISION CARE

“2.7 billion people live without the vision care they need to thrive in school, work, and daily life. A simple pair of eyeglasses can unlock their full potential.”

For the past twenty years, Leigh Fourie of Vision in Focus in Stellenbosch has attended to countless cases which Love to Give has sent to her. The vision of many children and adults has been improved and their lives have been changed thanks to her and her team’s free service to them.

In April, thanks to Kate Rosholt from Sydney, the One Sight Essilor Luxottica team worked with us to give our beneficiaries the opportunity to have their eyes tested and to receive glasses if needed. Over a few weeks, the Love to Give team screened 1274 people – learners from the Ikaya and Kayamandi Primary Schools and our adult beneficiaries. A team of 48 volunteer optometrists and professionals then took over our centre for a week and of all the people tested, 521 people needed and were given spectacles.

OUR NEW LIBRARY
Love to Give has joined the #OnWednesdaysWeRead movement. Every Wednesday, people across communities are taking 30 minutes to stop and read. At home, in libraries, in schools, at work. One shared moment. One simple habit.
For many years, the Mikhulu Trust Book-sharing programme, sponsored by the Kavod Trust, has enabled us to introduce books to children whose homes have no books. For years our library has been exclusively for pre-school children.

In support of the #OnWednesdaysWeRead initiative, we have added a new section to our existing library. The Kavod Trust has supported the set up costs of the new library including building new shelves and buying new books. A team from Capitec supported us on Mandela day and donated many books to the new library too.

We are delighted that our Youth Interns now have the opportunity of reading top quality fiction and non-fiction, with a variety of local and international authors.

ART AUCTION FOR SCHOOL CLOTHES

For the last 25 years, acclaimed Stellenbosch artist and teacher, Marie Stander has held an art auction to raise money to buy school clothes for needy school children in Stellenbosch.

This year we identified 25 needy children at Ikaya and Kayamandi Primary schools and provided their names, ages, sizes and genders. Each child received new school clothes: shoes, a jersey and a rain jacket. We so appreciate this wonderful gift which was gratefully received by the children and their parents.

DEADLY DOZEN DONATION

Deadly Dozen, a hybrid fitness racing community, hosts large-scale fitness events around South Africa, bringing together athletes, families, gyms, and local communities through endurance and strength-based events. In May, Deadly Dozen held an event in Stellenbosch at the Coetzenburg Athletics Stadium. They had heard about the recent storms and their impact on surrounding communities and decided to support us.

They donated all the spectator proceeds from the Stellenbosch event to Love to Give, and encouraged the athletes and spectators to bring donations including clothes, blankets and non-perishable food items.
